The Golden Age of Ocean Pirates Pirates have been around since ancient times. The Golden Age of piracy was in the 17th and early 18th centuries. Over 5000 pirates were said to be at sea during this time. Pirates targeted ships and sometimes attacked coastal towns. Famous pirates had terrifying reputations and flew gruesome flags like the ‘Jolly Roger’.

Captives were made to ‘walk the plank’ or thrown overboard. Pirates have existed since ancient times, even threatening ancient Greece and Roman ships. The Vikings were the most far-reaching pirates in early medieval Europe. The Golden Age of piracy lasted from 1650 to 1720 and these years are sometimes known as the “Golden Age of Piracy”
